Around the NHL in 30 Days – Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks are the focus today at the Blackhawk Up blog in FanSided’s Around the NHL in 30 Days. We all know that the Hawks’ core is strong with the likes of Toews, Kane, Hossa, and Keith. What you might not have known is that the Hawks became stronger this offseason with timely trades and signings. This is good news for fans who were shocked and letdown by the major restructuring done to the team last offseason after winning the Stanley Cup. Here’s a sample of what Blackhawk Up lead writer John Schultz has to say about the Hawks:

"The 2012 Blackhawks are a team that is retooled to handle the physical game that was often lacking last year and that is needed to go deep into the playoffs. How far they actually go is the million dollar question, but heading into the season their chances are as good as any – and better than most."

Strong words from a die-hard Hawks fan. But honestly, this team on paper is better than last year… and let’s not forget that last year’s team almost eliminated the Vancouver Canucks in the first round of the NHL Playoffs. Let’s see how the Sharks and Hawks matched up last year:

4 Games: San Jose won 3 of 4 meetings

After the Sharks were swept 4-0 by the Hawks in the 2010 Western Conference Finals they made the Hawks pay last regular season. There were a lot of goals scored in 3 of the 4 games: 5-2 Sharks, 5-3 Sharks, and the lone loss the the Hawks last year by a 6-3 score. The other Sharks win was a 2-1 overtime win on December 12, 2010.

These teams matchup well, and for the last couple of years they are considered to be possible Western Conference Finals opponents. I agree that the Hawks are a great team full of stars and dependable role players. I was happy that the Hawks won their first championship in 40 years. Deep down I can admit that the Sharks getting swept by the Hawks in 2010 was a great learning experience for San Jose and made them stronger… But that’s it! Come October 8th (opening day for the Sharks’ season) it’s game on and no more goodwill for the Hawks.

This is the year for Team Teal! And we will go through the Hawks if needed to get ‘er done!!

Tomorrow in FanSided’s Around the NHL in 30 Days the Colorado Avalanche are featured.
