Byers 3 Game Ban For Hit On Desi

facebooktwitterreddit

The cost of throwing illegal hits to head? Only a 3 game suspension and about $9,000.

On Saturday during the San Jose Sharks bout with the Columbus Blue Jackets when Dane Byers just about took the head off of Sharks forward Andrew Desjardins, he was awarded with a match penalty for intent to injure. The NHL states that a match penalty as:

"21.1 Match Penalty – A match penalty involves the suspension of a player for the balance of the game and the offender shall be ordered to the dressing room immediately.A match penalty shall be imposed on any player who deliberately attempts to injure or who deliberately injures an opponent in any manner."

According to Sharks rinkside reporter, Brodie Brazil’s tweet , Shanahan cites Byers “driving his left shoulder up” into the head of Desjardins as a violation of rule 48.1 (illegal check to the head).

Mercury News’ David Pollak posted this video of Shanahan talking about Byers’ suspension on his twitter.

Too much? Too little? Byers is a repeat offender having been suspended once in 2009.
