BoT Fight Club: Start the Week Right, Enjoy a Fight (or Seven)

The crack staff at Blades of Teal is very dedicated and devoted to always working hard and tirelessly to bring you the best in Sharks hockey, NHL coverage and behind the scenes stories about hockey that bring the whole sport to a new light. We are going to feature several articles of this season, the post season and beyond (regardless of where the Sharks finish up). If you are looking for a heart warming story of good sportsmanship and cheer…well, sorry…this isn’t quite that article. Just when you thought it was safe to go back on the ice, The Blades of Teal Fight Club makes it’s return in giving you the other side of the sport. That is the side that of grown men acting out their life’s aggressions on another fellow man all in the name of professional athletic competition.

This has been quite a week as several teams are in the race for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Tensions tend to get very heated in many of these games. Hockey is the ultimate team game because for a team to be successful in accomplishing their ultimate goal, it takes a lot of physical commitment from each and every player on the ice. Your mindset has to be very tough, and the body has to be able and willing to take a pounding. There are those out there who can handle what is thrown at them, and there are those who are known to dish it out.

First up is former San Jose Shark Brad Staubitz, now with the Montreal Canadians mixing it up Saturday night as the Canadians and Toronto Maple Leafs renewed their long running hostilities towards one another. Staubitz took on the Maple Leafs’ Mike Brown in a very decent and entertaining scrap:

I have to give Staubitz the split decision there…

Next up, we have Detroit’s Brendan Smith versus Chicago’s Andrew Shaw in a battle of rookie heavyweights in what turned out to quite the crowd pleaser if you like jackhammer style punches thrown…

I have to give that one to the Red Wings’ Smith who got the better quality fists in as the fight wore on…the Blackhawks however took the game 2-1…

Next up, the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins also got reaquainted with one another on this fine Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This was a good contest in NBC Sunday morning/afternoon that had plenty of action and a couple of fisticuffs to boot…

First up it was Lane McDermmott of the Boston Bruins going up against Mike Rupp of the New York Rangers. This took place just a few minutes into the contest that was fairly heated throughout…

Later in the period, the Rangers’ Brandon Purst for some reason thought it would be a good idea to take on the Bruins’ Milan Lucic. I’m sure if Purst had this moment to do over again, he would have picked an opponent a little more closer to his size and stature…

I give Purst an “E” for effort, however I take Lucic in a TKO…

The Phladelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals hooked up for another goalies dual won by the Flyers 1-0. Aside from the tight defensive game that was played, the Flyers Scott Hartnell and the Capitals Troy Brower still found time to renew acquaintances…

I give this one to Brower who took down Hartnell with a pretty strong body slam & punch…

In the desert Saturday night it was Colton Gilles of the Columbus Blue Jackets taking on Chris Sommers of the Phoenix Coyotes in a scrap where the two just could not get enough of one another…

In a close decision I’m giving this one to Gillis. Just because he’s on the worst team in the Western Conference doens’t mean he can’t “bring it” when he has to…

And finally this past Wednesday Night there was nothing as quite as touching as the Buffalo Sabres and the Anaheim Ducks celebrating a well played game with the post game handshake, though it’s varies a little from the one you see at the end of a playoff series…

Remember, these are professionals. Please do not try any of these things at home, work, on the golf course or anywhere else unless you’re a professional hockey player…This is the NHL and the Blades of Teal Fight Club, not the Ice Capades…
