Trade Tracker: Waiting For Wilson…
By Mike Reed
Even without Rick Nash or Roberto Luongo moving, we’ve had a few nice deals done since the season ended. Still waiting for Doug to start the bloodletting, but in the meantime here’s a quick roundup of who’s done what, who the winners are, and a link to commentary from around fansided where appropriate.
Leafs acquire: James van Reimsdyk
Flyers acquire: Luke Schenn
Winner: Leafs. Fills a strong need for both teams, but JVR has the potential to be an elite player if he can stay on the ice.
Lightning acquire: Benoit Pouliot
Bruins acquire: Michel Ouellet
Winner: Who for who? Moving on…
Jets acquire: Rights to UFA Jonas Gustavsson
Leafs acquire: Conditional 7th Round Pick (2013), conditional on the Jets signing him
Winner: Leafs. They have a starting goalie in James Reimer and are really just looking to get something for someone who’d be leaving anyway. Jets did ok too, though, Pavelec is a RFA and I’ve read some KHL rumors about him.
UPDATED WINNER: Jets. Looks like the pressure that this trade put on Pavelec worked, he just signed a 5 year deal to stay in the ‘Peg. Now the Jets can just go about not signing The Monster, the pick will fade away, The Monster will refuse to go back to Toronto and the Leafs prove to be just a pawn in the bigger Pavelec deal.
Coyotes acquire: Zbynek Michalek
Penguins acquire: Harrison Ruopp, Marc Cheverie, 3rd round pick
Winner: Coyotes. 2 prospects for a proven player. This and the Staal deal make me think that the Penguins are gearing up for something big.
Hurricans acquire: Jordan Staal
Penguins acquire: Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumoulin, 1st round pick
Winner: Hurricanes. Whoever gets the best player in the deal usually wins. The Cardiac Cane blog commented that fans have mixed emotions…they shouldn’t. Staal would be a first or second line center on most teams, particularly a team that didn’t have Crosby and Malkin.
Capitals acquire: Mike Ribeiro
Stars acquire: Cody Eakin, 2nd round pick
Winner: Caps and Sharks fans. Ribeiro is out of the division and Eakin looks to be a solid 2-way role player who won’t do any massive damage anytime soon.
Islanders acquire: Lubomir Visnovsky
Ducks acquire: 2nd round pick
Winner: San Jose Sharks. Visnovsky leaves an in-division rival. Rumors are already swirling that Visnovsky would rather play in the KHL than play for the Islanders.
Blue Jackets acquire: Sergei Bobrovsky
Flyers acquire: 2nd and two 4th round picks.
Winner: CBJ. A goalie who many think could evolve into a solid starter? Remember it wasn’t Humaaangous Beeg who started that Winter Classic game after being featured on 24/7, it was Bobrovsky. Fire That Cannon blog, we disagree.
Predators acquire: Sebastien Caron, two 2nd round picks
Lightning acquire: Anders Lindback, Kyle Wilson, 7th round pick
Winner: Lightning. OK, so Steve Yzerman’s moves so far in this offseason have been less than interesting. But it’s clear he’s acquiring assets, the two 2nd round picks could pay big dividends.
