The New Talk of ChompTown: Shane Doan

facebooktwitterreddit

The Rick Nash fad has become just that. A fad. The news of him came and went just in a matter of days. The new talk of the town now is the former/current Phoenix right winger, Shane Doan. I won’t be covering anything that media has already covered though.

There is one reason and one reason only why I would want Shane Doan in a Sharks’ jersey. We only have two natural right wingers currently, Ryane Clowe and Adam Burish. The addition of Doan would allow for us to have veteran depth in that position. But hockey players now are so versatile, I’m sure one of our 10+ centers can cover right wing easily; Wingels, Pavelski, Ferriero just to name a few.

I’ve said time and time again, we need to go younger, faster, and more skilled overall. The addition of Doan would not really give the team any of that. What Doan can provide is a solid point getter getting 50+ points in 11 of 14 seasons as a pro in Phoenix. If there is any chance that we can get him on a bargain, then I’d say go for it. Anything with the price of <$2 million would be great. But the chances are very slim because the Canucks, Penguins, and Red Wings all want him.

In addition, Doan vs. Nash? It’s no contest. Nash all the way. If I had to choose one of these two high profiled free agents, Nash (28) is younger than Doan (35), faster, better scorer, and has more skill overall. One problem with both of these players… They are a one team, one system type of players. Nash and Doan have only been with the Blue Jackets and Coyotes respectively. If I had to choose, I think the Blue Jackets’ system resembles the Sharks’ more than the Coyotes to the Sharks. Care to debate? Tweet me @BMHo.
