Game Day Report: Worcester Sharks @ St. Johns Ice Caps

Today the proud AHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks are in action as the Worcester Sharks embark on a six game road trip away from the DCU Center.  The St. John’s Ice Caps are the minor league affiliate to NHL Winnipeg Jets.  St. John’s hosts Worcester in a back to back 2 game mini series against their divisional rivals at Mile One Centre.

When these two clubs last faced each other was back on November 3, 2012 in which the Ice Caps defeated the Worcester Sharks by a 3-2 final.  The goal scorers for the Sharks were defenseman Taylor Doherty and forward Curt Gogol.  The Ice Caps currently lead the season series 1-0 over Worcester.

As of today, Worcester has a 20-18-1-5 record that includes 46 points to their credit.  In addition, they are in third place of the AHL’s Atlantic Division and sitting in ninth place overall in the Eastern Conference.  For the hosts, the Ice Caps have a 21-22-1-2 record with 45 points.  Furthermore, St. Johns is in dead last of the Atlantic and are ranked 11th the East.

QUICK HITS: The Sharks have lost three straight games and eight of their last nine overall, including three in a shootout.  Worcester is just 2-5-0-3 in its last 10 games… D Matt Tennyson is fourth in power play assists (11) amongst all AHL rookies.  Worcester is 13-9-1-3 vs. Atlantic Division opponents this season.  G Harri Sateri started three-of-four matchups at Mile One Centre last season, winning twice.  However, in five starts vs. STJ overall, Sateri allowed three goals or more in all but one outing.  Sateri’s 50 saves on Dec. 2 in a 3-2 shootout win over PRO are tied for a single-game high in the AHL this season.  Among active Sharks players who played with the club last season vs. STJ, F John McCarthy led his team with five points (1G, 4A) in five games played… The Sharks have allowed three shorthanded goals on the road this season, 10th most in the AHL.  WOR is 0-1 in its only Tuesday game this season.  F Tim Kennedy had a six-game road scoring streak from Nov. 14 to Dec. 9 during which he scored eight goals.   The Sharks are tied with the Binghamton Senators for the most major penalties in a single game with eight.

STJ is 6-3 all-time vs. WOR but just 1-3 at Mile One Centre.
