NHL.com has released their  initial batch of power rankings for the fresh 2013-14 NHL season. Curious as to where the San Jose Sharks place after a strong game against the Vancouver Canucks on October 3? Check out the link for the full rankings, but if you’re curious and don’t feel like hitting the jump, the boys in teal are currently the sixth best team in the league according to these power rankings.

What do you think? Too high? Too low? Just right?

Considering we’re only one or two games into each team’s season, we think NHL.com nailed the Sharks down pretty well. Ahead of San Jose:

  • Chicago Blackhawks
  • Los Angeles Kings
  • Detroit Red Wings
  • St. Louis Blues
  • Pittsburgh Penguins

The first big chance for the Sharks to jump ahead of any of these teams will likely come on October 15, as San Jose is set to take on the Blues. We know that the players couldn’t possibly care less about things like power rankings, but it’s still interesting to see where your favorite team falls on lists like this.

Worth of note as well are the solid squads that San Jose is ahead of. The defending Eastern Conference Champion Boston Bruins fell to No. 7 behind the Sharks, as did the New York Rangers (No. 8) and Washington Capitals (No. 10).

San Jose fans should be delighted to see the Anaheim Ducks barely making the cut at No. 15 and the Vancouver Canucks cooling their heels at No. 11.

If the Sharks continue to play like they did last night, it should only be a matter of time before they crack the top-five.

What do you guys think? We’d love to heart from you in the comments section or via twitter. Give us a follow and a holler.
