Alex Stalock made 21 saves to go along with clutch third period goals from Matt Nieto and Patrick Marleau as the San Jose Sharks edged out the New Jersey Devils 4-2.
The Sharks entered the game splitting the first two games of their three game post-Olympic road trip. The game featured a very tight first period followed by a very wide open second period in which each team exchanged body blows in what was a hard-fought and fast contest throughout.
Stalock, with the win, picked up his 10th of the season and his second win of the road trip, having also won in Philadelphia three days earlier. Logan Couture and Raffi Torres scored goals for Team Teal in the second period, with Torres getting his third goal on his third shot taken since his return to the lineup.
The Sharks’ penalty kill units also had a huge afternoon as they were able to successfully kill and control all four Devils’ power play opportunities. The game also had an interesting twist as former Shark Ryane Clowe, now with New Jersey, was on the opposing bench for the first time in his career. Finally, the win give the Sharks a sweep of New Jersey on the season as well.
