Nils Ekman was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 1994 draft, but never played for the Flames and never cracked an NHL roster until the 1999 season when he played for the Tampa Bay Lightning. After a combined 24 points in 2 seasons with the Lightning, Ekman left the NHL for a few years before getting another chance with the San Jose Sharks during the 2003-2004 season. He was a breakout player that year. He played in every game, and attributed 55 points to the offense, which is an awful lot for a player who struggled to stay on an NHL roster for about 10 years. The season after the lockout, Ekman continued to put up strong numbers with the Sharks, scoring 57 points in 77 games. The Sharks would end up trading Ekman the next season to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Sharks made a smart decision trading Ekman away, because his stats were boosted due to playing with Joe Thornton and Jonathan Cheechoo, a line that made any player look spectacular. Ekman never panned out in Pittsburgh and ended up bowing out of the league after that season. Still, his two year stint in San Jose makes him the best number 28 for the San Jose Sharks.
