The San Jose Sharks have finally announced that an agreement has been made to sign Justin Braun to a five-year contract extension. The deal, which will begin next season, will keep Braun on the roster through the 2019-20 campaign.

Upon the announcement, general manager Doug Wilson had this to say:

"“Justin has emerged as one of our most well-rounded and dependable defensemen. He’s an excellent skater who excels in matching up against the opponents top players on a nightly basis and fits in well with our core group of younger players. We feel Justin has just scratched the surface of his talent and we are excited to have him under contract for the next six seasons.”"

Those keeping up on the roster signings over the offseason were getting slightly nervous that a deal would not be made with Braun. Not that the Sharks weren’t wanting to keep him, but there are always underlying factors that can keep someone from signing. Prior to the news, Braun would have reached unrestricted free agency after the coming season.

Braun had a career year during the 2013-14 campaign for points, goals and assists at 17, 4 and 13 respectively. Braun also played the entire seven playoff games, contributing one goal and one assists during the postseason.

I think we all agree with Bret Hedican in congratulating Braun on his extension.

Here’s to another career year for Justin Braun with the San Jose Sharks!
