San Jose Sharks: John Scott Receives 2 Game Suspension

facebooktwitterreddit

San Jose Sharks forward John Scott has been suspended for two games following the closest thing we’ve seen to a line brawl in a very long time.

If you missed it, here’s a replay and explanation given by the league:

Scott had a hearing with the NHL this morning. It’s being said that Scott came onto the ice during a legal line change, but targeted Anaheim Ducks’ Tim Jackman.

Rule 70.2 states that “No player or goalkeeper may leave the players’ or penalty bench at any time during an altercation or for the purpose of starting an altercation. Substitutions made before the altercation shall be permitted provided the players so substituting do not enter the altercation.

A player who has entered the game on a legal line change or legally from the penalty bench (penalty time has expired) who starts an altercation maybe subject to discipline in accordance with Rule 28 — supplemental discipline.”

There were a total of 165 penalty minutes during the game, 127 of which were in the third period. Needless to say, this was an incredibly heated game. I knew that the game would be tough, but brawls like this so early in the season was a little unexpected, at least to me.

Everyone knew that Scott would play the enforcer role when coming to the Sharks this season. But congratulations on becoming the first player to receive a suspension by the NHL during the 2014-15 campaign!
