The San Jose Sharks, on Tuesday, acquired goalie Martin Jones from the Boston Bruins for forward prospect Sean Kuraly and a 2016 first round pick. Jones had previously been traded to Boston by the Los Angeles Kings prior to the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, who had acquired Milan Lucic as a part of that trade.

The move comes two days after former Sharks starter Antti Niemi‘s rights were traded to the Dallas Stars in exchange for their 7th round pick (193rd overall) in Saturday’s NHL Entry Draft. Nemo was signed to a three-year contract on Monday.

According to hockey-reference, the 25-year-old net minder went 16-11-2 in 34 games played during parts of both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons with the L.A. Kings, with a .923 save percentage, 1.99 GAA, and a combined total of seven shutouts.

Jones can become an restricted free agent if he’s not signed by Wednesday. However, it’s all but a given that he does sign with San Jose as you don’t give up a first-round pick for a backup goalie. Jones will be competing with backup Alex Stalock, who still has one-year left on his deal.

Sean Kuraly is a 22-year-old unsigned prospect selected by the Sharks in the 2011 NHL Draft. This season, in his junior year at Miami University, he had 19 goals and 29 points in 40 games.

UPDATE: The Sharks and Jones have agreed to a new contract that will keep Jones in San Jose for the next three seasons. According to Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area, the deal will be a three-year, $9M contract.

With the Jones contract now done, San Jose enters the free agent frenzy tomorrow with just under $10M in salary cap space.
