While things on the ice didn’t go as planned for Brent Burns and the rest of his San Jose Sharks, Burns was great ambassador of the Sharks organization off the ice. On Wednesday night at the 2015 NHL Awards in Las Vegas, Burns was rewarded for his efforts as he received the NHL Foundation Player Award for his service in the community.
According to the NHL, the award is given annually to the player “who applies the core values of (ice) hockey-commitment, perseverance and teamwork-to enrich the lives of people in his community.”
Burns is known mostly for his work in support of the military. He has been connected with Defending The Blue Line which helps military children become involved with the game of hockey. Also, Burns gives away suite tickets to every Sharks home game to military families and is often
Finally, Burns raised more than $15,000 in Burnzie’s Buzz Cut for Charity, the second year of the event, where Burns and teammates shave their heads, and in Burns’ case his beard, for charity. Burns was a finalist back in 2013-14 and becomes the first Sharks player to ever receive this award.
