Report: San Jose Sharks Sign Troy Grosenick to Two-Year Extension
The San Jose Sharks have inked Troy Grosenick to a two-way, 1.2 million dollar extension. TVA’s Renaud Lavoie first broke the news with this tweet:
The contract will be two-way for the upcoming 2015-16 season before becoming one-way for 2016-17. Grosenick spent almost his entire season in the AHL with the Worcester Sharks, where he was 20-13-3 with a 2.63 GAA and .906 save percentage in 36 games. He made two appearances in the Calder Cup Playoffs picking up Worcester’s lone win with a 3.41 goals-against-average and an .886 save percetange.
He made his NHL debut against the Carolina Hurricanes and recorded his first career shutout win, helping the Sharks to a 2-0 victory at PNC Arena. However, he backstopped Team Teal in a 4-1 loss against the Buffalo Sabres two days later.
Last week, general manager Doug Wilson indicated that San Jose believed in Grosenick and this contract backs that up. It appears the plan for Grosenick, who battled through concussion problems last season, is to play a majority of this season with the San Jose Barracuda and be the head man down there. If Grosenick can remain healthy, it will give him the opportunity to play a majority of the games and refine his craft.
Then, in 2016-17, he will be able to challenge for the starting or backup role with the Sharks since Alex Stalock only has one more year remaining on his current deal. Next year is a big one for Stalock as Grosenick will be gunning for his spot.
Grosenick was initially signed by the Sharks as a free agent out of Union College in April 2013.
