The San Jose Sharks wrapped up a busy weekend as the 2015 NHL Entry Draft was filled with plenty of news and action. In case you missed anything, here’s a breakdown of some of the news from this past weekend:
– The Sharks used the ninth overall draft pick to select Timo Meier, a 6-foot-1, 209-pound right-wing prospect from Switzerland who scored 44 goals and 46 assists with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season. For a further breakdown of Meier’s game, read a more detailed analysis of him here.
– San Jose traded up eight spots in the second round to select defenseman Jeremy Roy with the 31st overall pick. From the sounds of it, Roy has a similar game to former Sharks fan favorite Dan Boyle. A breakdown of the rest of San Jose’s draft picks can be found here.
– General manager Doug Wilson wasn’t busy with the draft as he resigned Melker Karlsson and Troy Grosenick to two-year deals over the weekend. Karlsson had a breakout rookie campaign with 13 goals and 11 assists.
– Head coach Peter DeBoer announced the Sharks will indeed have a captain this upcoming season after Joe Thornton was stripped of the captaincy last summer. The odds on favorite appears to be Joe Pavelski.
– Wilson will be in search of a new goalie as the Sharks traded Antti Niemi to the Dallas Stars. For now, Wilson will search the trade and free agent market in search of San Jose’s next goaltender.
