San Jose Sharks Release Rookie Game Roster

The San Jose Sharks are gearing up for their second annual Fan Fest tomorrow, along with the start of training camp for the 2015-16 season. One of the big highlights for the Fan Fest is a rookie game featuring prominent prospects from the San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks squaring off against one another at SAP Center.

The Sharks and Ducks will play a two-game, rookie mini-series if you will over the weekend, with games on Saturday and Sunday. San Jose released their 25-man, rookie game roster and it is comprised of 15 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders.

Headliners for the mini-series from a Sharks perspective include 2015 first-round Timo Meier, 2014 first-round pick Nikolay Goldobin, 2015 second-round pick Jeremy Roy, and free agent signings in Joonas Donskoi and Nikita Jevpalovs.

More from Prospects

It’ll be interesting to see how Meier holds up against other top prospects. He burst on to the scene this past season with Halifax in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) with 44 goals and 46 assists in 61 games played. Meier already has an NHL-type frame, but this weekend will provide a good litmus test before he returns for one more season in the QMJHL.

Another intriguing name to keep an eye on is Goldobin who showed flashes during the preseason last year with the Sharks. Goldobin shined during San Jose’s prospects scrimmage earlier this summer and he should be pushing for a roster spot for the upcoming season. Seeing how he performs against some of the Ducks top prospects should give a nice barometer for where Goldobin’s game has improved.

Finally, seeing Donskoi and Jevpalovs on North American ice will be a treat for Sharks fans. Of the two, I’m interested in how Donskoi performs because he seems to be someone who could come out of nowhere and make the Sharks team out of training camp. Donskoi is an older prospect who could come in and be this year’s Melker Karlsson in terms of impact.

Here is a full breakdown of the roster:

Goaltenders (2): Liam Herbst (#34) and Joel Rumpel (#35)

Defensemen (8): Julius Bergman (#63), Danny Federico (#94), Cavan Fitzgerald (#76), Patrick McNally (#51), Rick Pinkston (#43), Jeremy Roy (#81), Joakim Ryan (#47) and Alexis Vanier (#64)

Forwards (15): Vincent Arseneau (#67), Gabryel Boudreau (#90), Rourke Chartier (#60), Mike DiPaolo (#96), Joonas Donskoi (#27), Daniel Doremus (#72), Nikolay Goldobin (#82), Stephen Harper (#78), Adam Helewka (#52), Nikita Jevpalovs (#53), Kevin Labanc (#62), Timo Meier (#28), Joey Ratelle (#95), Dylan Sadowy (#59) and Alex Schoenborn (#56)

Tickets for the rookie game are $5 on Saturday and that will grant you access to Fan Fest as well. All proceeds will benefit the Sharks Foundation.
