San Jose Sharks Sign Top Prospect Jeremy Roy
The San Jose Sharks and general manager Doug Wilson have done a very nice job in recent drafts of selecting high-end, impact prospects that should be ready to help the Sharks in the near future. One of those prospects is 2015 second-round pick, number 31 overall, Jeremy Roy who reminds many people of former San Jose Sharks great Dan Boyle.
The Sharks locked up Roy, who is just 18 years old, by signing him to a standard, entry-level contract.
Roy has been a force in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) with the Sherbrooke Phoenix. In 100 games over the course of the past two seasons, Roy has racked up 19 goals and 68 assists to go along with 60 penalty minutes for the Phoenix.
During his rookie campaign, Roy led all defensemen in the QMJHL in points (44), goals (14) and assists (30), and was named the league’s Defensive Rookie of the Year.

The San Jose Sharks traded up eight spots with the Colorado Avalanche in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft to select Roy at the beginning of the second round. San Jose has struggled in recent years to develop top-flight defensemen, but Roy could be a difference-maker for the Sharks. According to Corey Pronman of ESPN, Roy is ranked as San Jose’s top overall prospect.
Despite his small stature, Roy’s playmaking ability and hockey intelligence is unquestioned. Roy has represented Team Canada on a couple of different occasions throughout his career. Roy was a member of Team Canada’s U-18 World Junior Championship team this past season, registering four points (three goals and one assist), as the Canadians took home the bronze medal.
Roy was an alternate captain for Canada during the Hlinka Memorial Tournament , recording three assists en route to the gold medal in 2014. Finally, Roy served as a captain for Quebec in the 2014 U-17 Hockey Challenge where he recorded five points.
As you can see, Roy has extensive international experience and will likely be a member of Canada’s U-20 World Junior team. Also, Roy has the intangibles as he’s been a captain along with an alternate captain throughout his young career.
Roy is currently in camp with the San Jose Sharks, but he is likely heading back to the QMJHL for one more season. If Roy continues his development, he shouldn’t have to wait too long before he is back in San Jose making his NHL debut.
