Barracuda Report: San Jose Barracuda Shutout In Consecutive Games

The San Jose Barracuda were off to a decent start in their inaugural season as a franchise, but last week was a tough one for the Barracuda. San Jose dropped a pair of 3-0 shutouts to division rivals, the San Diego Gulls (Anaheim Ducks) and Ontario Reign (Los Angeles Kings), on consecutive nights as the Barracuda are currently tied for last place within the Pacific Division.

San Jose (2-3-0-1, five points and a points percentage of .417%) couldn’t muster up much in the way of offense against two of the better teams in the AHL. John Gibson of the Gulls, who’s seen plenty of time with the Ducks at the NHL level, stopped all 23 shots he faced as San Diego took two straight games from the Barracuda.

Aaron Dell got the start for San Jose and played fairly well, stopping 31 of 34 shots, but it was not enough as the Barracuda are offensively inept at the moment.

One night later, it was more of the same down in Southern California as San Jose faced another NHL regular in net who offered little in the way of chances for the Barracuda. Peter Budaj already recorded his third shutout of the season, stopping all 24 shots in the process. Meanwhile, Troy Grosenick got the start for San Jose, but he was replaced following the first period after picking up an injury towards the end of the first frame.

Grosenick stopped of 11 of the 12 shots he faced, while Dell came in and made 14 saves on 15 shots. Through their first six games, it’s Dell who’s put up the better numbers between the pipes. In four games played, Dell has posted a 2-1-0 record  with a 2.21 goals-against-average (GAA) and a .926 save percentage. On the other hand, Grosenick sports an 0-2-1 record with a 2.90 GAA and a .917 save percentage in his three contests.

Micheal Haley continues to lead the Barracuda in scoring with four goals, six points and a plus-three rating in his five games played to date. Melker Karlsson continues his rehab in the AHL, popping in-and-out of the lineup as he works his way back from a lower-body injury. Karlsson has appeared in just two games thus far, recording one assist.

The Barracuda return to the ice for their only game during the upcoming week as they host the Reign on Sunday, Nov. 1 at SAP Center to kick off a three-game homestand. Let’s see if San Jose can bounce back and find the back of the net next time out.
