San Jose holds a 14-point cushion over Vancouver and Arizona for the final playoff spot in the Pacific.

The San Jose Sharks began the month of March by building off their strong month of February. San Jose played all Canadian teams last week, although two of the three contests came against the Vancouver Canucks. The Sharks went 2-1-0, with the lone loss coming on Saturday night against the Canucks.

San Jose is comfortably in a playoff position at the moment, but they’re still keeping their sights on the division crown. Team teal will have to string together a series of wins to make that happen as the Anaheim Ducks are simply lights out having won 11 in-a-row. More realistically, the Sharks will look to chase down the Los Angeles Kings to secure home-ice advantage in that first round.

Get caught up on all the latest Sharks news notes in the week’s roundup:

– After defeating the Canucks last Sunday night, San Jose returned home for a matchup against the Montreal Canadiens on leap day. The Sharks used a strong start and a big third period to take home a convincing 6-2 victory last Monday night. Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns all had three points in the contest.

More from Blades of Teal

– The Montreal game concluded the February portion of the schedule for San Jose, and this season was much better to the Sharks and their fans. San Jose thrived during the second month of the year, rather than crumbling apart like they did last season.

– For the second time in the span of five days, the Sharks found themselves trailing the Canucks by one goal heading into the final frame in Vancouver. Once again, San Jose would come from behind to down the Canucks as Burns and Patrick Marleau would strike as the Sharks won their third-straight game.

– As San Jose looked to take three games from Vancouver in the span of a week, the Sharks were their own worst enemy as team teal couldn’t stay out of the sin bin. The Canucks made San Jose pay as they used three power-play tallies to spoil James Reimer’s debut as Vancouver pulled out a 3-2 win.

Brent Burns has been an offensive force ever since coming to San Jose, but in recent months, Burns has become a more well-rounded player as he continues to assert himself for the Sharks.

– With the trade deadline passing, Doug Wilson remained busy by inking a pair of 20-year-old forwards to entry-level contracts.

– Finally, as the season dwindles down in their inaugural campaign, the San Jose Barracuda continue to hang on in the Calder Cup playoff race as San Jose faces the stretch run to the postseason.

The Sharks return to action tonight as they take on the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers on back-to-back night before heading back to SAP Center for a three-game home stand against Eastern Conference opposition.
