The San Jose Sharks took down the Arizona Coyotes 3 – 2 in an overtime thriller at the SAP Center.  Brent Burns sealed the deal with a ridiculously filthy goal in the extra frame.

Tonight was the 500th game of Brenden Dillon‘s career, his 351st in a teal sweater. He logged 16:42 and threw out 3 hits. It’s been nice seeing the development of his career over the past few years since he’s joined the San Jose Sharks. From being a 6th defensemen to becoming a key part of Team Teal’s success, the guy has come a long way.

In’s and Out’s

During tonight’s match-up it definitely showed that both of these teams haven’t played in over a week. The game started slowly while the teams sloppily exchanged scoring chances. But eventually pucks started to settle on skaters sticks and the goals started to flow for both teams.

It was a back and forth contest with both Team Teal and the Desert Dogs getting significant pressure inside each others zones. The San Jose Sharks offense was funneled through Burn’s shot and Kane’s speed. They both generated 8 shots on goal and play integral parts in tonight’s success.

A lot of the San Jose Sharks seemed to still be on vacation. However not Martin Jones, he made some incredible stops facing 33 shots with 31 saves (.939 SV%). His resilience and calming presence kept this San Jose Sharks team in check for the entirety of the game.

Main Events

The first goal that was scored came at the expense of Tim Heed. He turned the puck over right in front of Martin Jones allowed Conor Garland to scoop it in and take the early lead for the Coyotes at 10:04 in the 2nd.

That lead was short lived with Kevin Labanc finishing off the scoring opportunity generated by a Brent Burns slapper at 12:09 in the second.

Only forty seconds transpired until it was Pavelski’s turn to get on the score sheet. The captain was able to clean up the mess that Timo Meier created in front of the net at 12:53 in the second.

ARZ 1 – 2 SJ

The San Jose Sharks carried the lead for a stretch but ultimately surrendered it to the Desert Dogs. Josh Archibald was able to bury home a one timer in the slot off a behind the net pass from Mario Kempe at 7:10 in the third.

ARZ 2 – 2 SJ

After 60:00 minutes the game needed to go overtime.

At 3:14 in the extra frame Brent Burns received a nifty back handed dish from Tomas Hertl, and buried it home with a wicked move on the Coyotes goaltender Kuemper. Here’s a clip courtesy of the San Jose Sharks Twitter in case you missed it.

There are worse ways to return from an extended All Star break…

On the Horizon:

The San Jose Sharks head North towards Manitoba for a game against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday, 2/5/2019. This is part of a 4 game western Canadian road trip that doesn’t bring Team Teal home until Valentines day.
