In light of the recent shooting in Gilroy, the greater Bay Area needs the San Jose Sharks now more than ever.

Before this article starts, from us at Blades of Teal and the rest of the San Jose Sharks community we’d just like to mention that to all those affected by the shooting, we are sorry for your loss, and our hearts and thoughts go out to you.

Sports throughout history has been an outlet to force people to come together, to understand each other, and set aside our differences. For the city of San Jose and its surrounding areas the Sharks have been that outlet.

There is a sense of pride in being a San Josean, and there is a sense of pride in our communities of the Sharks. For years people from Mountain View all the way down into Santa Cruz and Gilroy have packed the tank in hopes of a magic season, and to cheer on their team.

But now our communities are under attack by the darkness that has ensued because of the shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. This society needs an outlet, it needs a place to unite and mourn. Similar to how the Vegas Golden Knights brought their community together after the Vegas shootings.

Say what you will about our rivals but there is no denying what they achieved was bigger than sports. They came together and the Knights were their beacon of hope. The Sharks have to assume that role for the San Jose area. Quite frankly I think they will.

Although there is no way to get rid of the destruction and hurt that got caused, the San Jose Sharks can help alleviate that pain through outreaching to these affected areas. Furthermore, looking at the current roster and the events that have occurred, if there was ever a time to strike, to bring a cup to the Bay Area, the time is now. Every single player in that locker room knows it and they are going to their best to make this upcoming season the best one in Sharks history.

We have to embrace our teal as fans and as a community to achieve something far bigger than sports and start the healing process.
