After almost an entire month of no news, the San Jose Sharks have made two signings in quick succession of each other. The other day it was announced Macklin Celebrini has been locked in for another five years (costing $18.8 million annually), and yesterday Collin Graf was extended for another three (costing $4.25 million annually). Signing the superstar Celebrini was an obvious priority, but signing Graf was also important.
Collin Graf has spent his entire career being the underdog. His freshman year at Union College, Graf recorded 22 points (11G, 11A) in 37 games but decided it wasn’t the right fit for him. His sophomore year he transferred to Quinnipiac University, where he won a NCAA Championship, and fell into a natural rhythm where he notched 59 points (21G, 38A) in 41 games. His success continued his junior season, scoring 49 points (22G, 27A) in 34 games played. Although he was never drafted, the Sharks saw his work ethic and continued improvement and decided to sign him. That same season he made 7 appearances in a teal sweater and even recorded two assists.
Now, Graf is a very underrated player in the NHL. Graf’s drive and worth ethic is inspiring, and apparent in his value to the Sharks. This past season, he put up 46 points (21G, 25A) and +6 in 81 games played, with his 21 goals being third most on the team behind only Macklin Celebrini (45) and Will Smith (24). Graf is a very versatile player: he can play both right wing and center, jump in on any line you need him to, and is an exceptionally skilled two-way forward. His penalty killing and defensive responsibility, reflective in his +6, are incredibly important to the Sharks: a team infamous for defensive breakdowns.
Everything about Collin Graf represents the type of player you want to have on your team. He’s hardworking, versatile, talented and especially grateful. Massive kudos need to also be sent General Manager, Mike Grier’s, way for nailing down Graf at such a steal. Graf was probably worth more than $4.25 million annually, but his commitment to the Sharks and himself is priceless.
