Today, Team Canada announced its 32-player roster for the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase. The World Junior Summer Showcase is a multi-nation camp with the ultimate purpose of evaluating players under 20-years-old ahead of the next World Junior Championship, giving the young talent an opportunity to showcase their value to their respective national teams. Of the 32 players selected, two are San Jose Sharks defensive prospects: Keaton Verhoeff and Ryan Lin.
After trading William Eklund, Kasper Halttunen and the rights to Brandon Svoboda to the Ottawa Senators ahead of the 2026 NHL Draft, the Sharks obtained the ninth overall pick. This pick was then used on University of North Dakota’s Keaton Verhoeff. Part of Verhoeff’s appeal is his size: standing at 6-foot four inches at only 18-years-old, he uses his physicality to break plays and force offensive rushes. Although he is not a great skater, his strength comes in handy when lifting sticks and charging the net, a skill not lost on Team Canada.
The Sharks initially held 20th overall too, but used it to acquire defenseman Michael Kesselring and the 27th overall pick from the Buffalo Sabres. Again using picks as leverage, the club managed to flip 27th, 62nd, and 120th for 21st overall: Ryan Lin. Although much smaller than Verhoeff, Lin is an incredibly strong offensive defenseman. Despite the struggles his team went through this past season, Lin still managed to put up 57 points (14G, 43A) in 53 games played. His ability to move the puck is incredibly valuable to this particular Team Canada, which has a very strong defensive group but not as much offensive firepower as we’re used to. Heading to the NCAA’s defending champions University of Denver in the coming season, Lin’s offensive abilities will only continue to grow.
The excitement generated from the draft continues to course through Sharks fans, especially now as young prospects are given their time to shine. With their inclusion in the World Junior Summer Showcase on a team with a powerful defensive group, plus heading (or in Verhoeff’s case, returning) to champion caliber NCAA teams in the upcoming season, Ryan Lin and Keaton Verhoeff’s ceilings continue to grow higher.
