Your San Jose Sharks have announced another trade. In a cap dump move, the Sharks acquired Jake Walman and a second-round pick from the Detroit Red Wings. San Jose has all the cap space in the world, and the extra pick is in the second round. It's Tampa's pick, so it is late in round two, but more throws at the dartboard, which is the draft, means there is a greater chance of one of the players selected panning out into a great player for the organization.

Walman is a strong player. After an overtime winner, his "Griddy" celebration shook the hockey world, and he has since repeated the feat. He was Moritz Seider's partner in Detroit for a long time, and he helped get the best out of the Germans so Walman would get a chance to come in and help the Sharks blueline out. It's a great trade to address a dire need.

Walman recorded 12 goals and 9 assists in 63 games this season for the Red Wings, proving that he can offer more than just a defensive presence for the organization. He's a robust top-four caliber defenseman, and his contract isn't even bad. $3.4 million against the cap for the next two seasons is fine for everything that Walman does. Detroit wanted to move his contract to try and get Shayne Gostisbehere re-signed, so the Sharks jumped at this.

It's an excellent situation for the organization to be in now. It will complicate things on the backend when trying to re-adjust the deck chairs. There are many defensemen under contract now that the Sharks have to try and balance out with some trades before the start of next season, or via waivers in the coming months. We're in for a long and complex offseason for the backend of the Sharks.
