We're a month into the season, and the San Jose Sharks are playing well. However, they're still in the midst of a rebuild. With young pieces all over this roster, the Sharks are still looking to make moves to improve this squad. With that, and we're approaching the end of November, trade bait lists and targets are coming out around, and the San Jose Sharks will feature heavily on these lists as we get to the trade deadline.
With the first iteration coming out via Frank Seravalli this week, the Sharks have one of the first 15 names thrown into the rumor mill in the 2024-25 season: defenseman Mario Ferraro. Ferraro has been with the organization since he was drafted in 2017. Now in his sixth year with the big club, the Sharks defenseman has played in 350 NHL games with 12 goals and 65 assists for 77 points on one of the worst teams in the league throughout his tenure.
Teams have thoroughly examined Ferraro for a while, but as a left-shot defenseman who can play both sides, he'll fill a need for most teams that want him. He's a solid two-way defenseman who skates well and has played a large part in the development of a few young Sharks blue-liners over the last two to three seasons. He'll be a great addition to the team if General Manager Mike Grier trades him.
The high to mid-round picks the Sharks could get back would be an excellent lottery ticket. While a first-round pick is probably out of the question unless Grier gets a bidding war brewing, a second to third-round pick for the Torontonian defenseman would be a great addition to teams wanting more defensive depth for a postseason run. He's capable with and without the puck and is cheap, making just $3.25 million.
