The Rangers raised some eyebrows around the league the other day when they scratched star winger Artemi Panarin for roster-management reasons. Normally, a decision like this is made when a trade is on the horizon, see just the other day when Ondrej Palat was scratched from the Devils' lineup just to be traded hours later to the Islanders. In the Rangers and Panarin’s case, a trade appears less imminent but is still likely to happen prior to the trade deadline.
According to Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now, the Sharks have reportedly checked in with the Rangers on Panarin, and that Panarin would be willing to sign an extension with the Sharks. This is important, as Chris Johnston reports that an extension would be required for Artemi Panarin to waive his no-move clause to facilitate a trade.
None of this means a trade is a foregone conclusion, but it does suggest the Sharks have at least some interest in adding the Russian superstar. At 34 years old, Panarin is still producing at a high level with 19 goals and 57 points in 52 games this season, and would undoubtedly be a top-line player on the Sharks. Adding Panarin would improve the Sharks' chances not only of making the playoffs this season but also of getting a more favorable round 1 matchup.
That said, it doesn't make the most sense for the Sharks to go after Artemi Panarin right now. Panarin would cost a lot on the market. Even with a full no-move and complete control over the final destination, the Sharks would likely need to part with 1 of their 2 first-round picks, along with some additional assets. And while they have stockpiled an impressive amount of picks and prospects over the years, dealing from that pool for a 34-year-old skill winger does not really address any of the team's biggest needs, nor does it fit the team's current contention window. Grier has also been hesitant in the past to offer term to older free agents, something that would likely need to change to bring in Panarin.
It is a positive sign for the Sharks that Panarin is willing to sign an extension with the Sharks. The Sharks, for the last few seasons, have rightfully been a destination that players with control opted to avoid. With Macklin Celebrini making waves around the league, however, that perception seems to have shifted, and players may be starting to view the Sharks as a prime destination.
It will certainly be an interesting situation to watch in the coming weeks. Grier and the Sharks were aggressive in adding Kiefer Sherwood, and perhaps they also view Panarin in a similar light. Regardless, the view of the Sharks around the league has drastically shifted in the last few months.
