Every season teams across the NHL have specialty nights during home games throughout the year. Whether it be just a silly theme or an appreciation night, these games are almost always well received. The San Jose Sharks, in particular, are an organization that does an exceptionally good job with appreciation nights and have many in store for this season.
With almost 31% of San Jose belonging to the Hispanic community, and almost 40% belonging to Asian communities, there is a lot of culture to celebrate. These celebrations come with immersive cultural experiences and specialty jerseys. Specialty jerseys are something the Sharks do especially well, reaching out to artists within those communities to design and represent their culture in the form of an awesome jersey.
On October 31, instead of a traditional Halloween celebration, the Sharks will honor the Hispanic community against the Ottawa Senators with the tenth Los Tiburones Night. Los Tiburones Night, simply translating to “the sharks”, has been a smashing success in previous seasons with specialty concessions and merchandise as well as cultural performances and more.
On March 5, against the Colorado Avalanche, fans can enjoy a celebration of South Asian Culture with the Sharks’ South Asian Culture Celebration. Another previously successful appreciation night, this celebration also features specialty merchandise and cultural performances. Both specialty nights in the past have also included Spanish and Punjabi language broadcasts, a truly inclusive celebration of those communities.
These two heritage nights are just scratching the surface of all the appreciation nights the Sharks have planned for the upcoming season. The hockey community comes in all shapes and sizes, and it’s important to make it a welcoming space for everyone. The Sharks previously have represented and celebrated the community in beautiful ways, and will continue the traditions this season, showing hockey truly is for everyone.
