General manager Doug Wilson announced yesterday that the San Jose Sharks had issued bonafide offers to the following players from the 2014 NHL Draft: Dylan Sadowy, Saginaw (OHL); Kevin Labanc, Barrie (OHL); Alex Schoenborn, Portland (WHL); Alexis Vanier, Sherbrooke (QMJHL).
By issuing these offers, the Sharks will retain their negotiating rights. Sadowy and Schoenborn were both third-round selections, while Vanier was a fourth-round pick and Labanc was a sixth-round pick for San Jose.
Labanc was the one who put up the largest numbers this year, registering 31 goals and 76 assists in 68 games for Barrie, while adding two goals and four assists in nine playoff games.
Meanwhile, the Sharks did not offer a contract to 2013 second-round pick Gabryel Boudreau, meaning that he will re-enter the draft.

Another Potential Forward Target
Earlier this week in his popular “30 Thoughts” column, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet offered up another potential forward target for the Sharks: Zach Hyman from the University of Michigan.
As Friedman points out, Hyman informed the Florida Panthers that he will not sign with them and become an unrestricted free agent. Friedman noted the Sharks are one team interested in potentially trading for Hyman’s rights rather than battling it out in an attempt to sign Hyman as a free agent.
As a senior at Michigan, Hyman scored 22 goals and 32 assists in 37 games for the Wolverines. Hyman is six-foot-one and 194 pounds who would add another young forward prospect into San Jose’s talent pool.
Finally, Friedman wonders what Wilson will do come July 1, when free agency begins. Wilson, as Friedman indicates, does not like to dive heavily into the free agent market but he might have to as the Sharks need a goalie and at least one defenseman, if not more.
Typically, Wilson prefers to swing a trade rather than hit the open market, but he may have to do to both if he wants to improve San Jose this offseason. It should be interesting to see what kind of say new head coach Peter DeBoer has in what kind of players Wilson brings in.
