The San Jose Sharks and restricted free agent defenseman Brenden Dillon have agreed to terms on a new five-year deal that will keep Dillon in San Jose through the 2019-2020 season. The news was first reported by Katie Strang of ESPN and it’s a nice signing by general manager Doug Wilson.
According to Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area, the deal will be worth $16.35M over the course of the five-year deal and will carry a $3.27M cap hit. Here’s a further breakdown of the salary breakdown:
Dillon, just 24-years-old, was originally acquired from the Dallas Stars back on November 21 in exchange for Jason Demers. Dillon would go on to play in 60 games with the Sharks, but struggled in settling in with San Jose.
Dillon scored two goals and seven assists with the Sharks, but was a minus-11 in 19:13 of ice time. He was set to become a restricted free agent, but his new contract in San Jose will eat up two of his unrestricted free agent years. Also, the new deal does not contain any sort of no-trade or no-movement clause.

Dillon was a necessary piece for Wilson to bring back in the fold, especially as the Sharks blue line faltered last season. While Dillon didn’t have a great season, there’s plenty of talent to work with and he should be able to bounce back with a full season in San Jose.
The Sharks now have five defensemen signed for next season, as Dillon joins Justin Braun as the other San Jose defenseman to be signed through 2019-2020. With the signing of Dillon and Melker Karlsson, the Sharks should have just under $13M in salary cap space as free agency is set to begin on Wednesday, July 1.
