Following their first two preseason games against the Vancouver Canucks on Monday and Tuesday night, the San Jose Sharks trimmed their training camp roster by four players as the team prepares for the 2015-16 season.
Goaltender Joel Rumpel was re-assigned to training camp with the San Jose Barracuda, while some of the San Jose Sharks top prospects were assigned or returned to their junior clubs: Jeremy Roy (San Jose’s 2015 second-round pick), Rourke Chartier and Dylan Sadowy.
Again, none of these moves should come as a surprise as the Sharks don’t have many open roster spots available. For Rumpel, he was the fifth goaltender in camp and this gives him an opportunity to prepare and get some action with the Barracuda.

Roy was one of the interesting names to check out during the early portion of camp and during the prospect scrimmages, and it’s easy to see why many around the Sharks organization are excited about what Roy can bring.
He’s a fluid skater on the ice and is solid in his own zone, with the ability to join the rush and provide offense from the back end. He should be challenging for a spot on the San Jose Sharks roster in the not-so-distant future.
Chartier and Sadowy are prospects that will be worth monitoring throughout the season to see if they continue their current development.
As the roster cuts continue, the Sharks opening night roster is beginning to take shape. There’s still plenty of competition for the final spots on the blue line where San Jose will likely go with young defensemen. Also, youngsters such as Nikolay Goldobin and Joonas Donskoi are trying to make an impression on Peter DeBoer and his staff so they have no choice but to keep them around.
The Sharks will have some interesting battles and tough decisions as the season opener against the Los Angeles Kings on Oct. 7 fast approaches. Thus far, this looks like a much deeper outfit than the one that took the ice to begin the 2014-15 season in Los Angeles as well.
San Jose’s training camp roster now stands at 37 players. The San Jose Sharks return to action with a pair of preseason games at SAP Center over the weekend. San Jose hosts the Arizona Coyotes tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m., before taking on the Anaheim Ducks at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday night.
