San Jose Sharks News And Notes: Tierney, Stalock Recalled

Chris Tierney, Alex Stalock Recalled

What looked like a message being sent to a couple of struggling players didn’t last long as the San Jose Sharks recalled both Chris Tierney and Alex Stalock from the San Jose Barracuda, while reassigning Troy Grosenick back to the AHL.

The Stalock decision didn’t come as much of a surprise as Peter DeBoer mentioned that Stalock would rejoin the Sharks before their matchup against the Detroit Red Wings, and he was indeed in uniform serving as Martin Jones’ backup last night.

The time in the AHL went well for Stalock as he won both games for the Barracuda with a 1.96 goals-against-average (GAA) and a .930 save percentage. Those numbers are well above his 2-5-0 record, 2.98 GAA and .893 save percentage that he had with the Sharks.

He will likely see some time between the pipes within the next week as the San Jose will play four games in the next six nights. Let’s see if his improvements with the Barracuda can carry over to the NHL level.

Meanwhile, the decision to recall Tierney after only three games in the AHL is somewhat surprising. While Tierney performed well with one goal and two assists to go along with a plus-three rating during his time, DeBoer hinted that it could be an extended stay for Tierney. Frankly, he could have benefited from more time to really work on his game and confidence.

Instead, throwing him right back into the mix with the Sharks, where he had just three goals and five assists in 36 games, seems like some impatience by the organization.

Barclay Goodrow Named An AHL All-Star

Speaking of the Barracuda, Barclay Goodrow was named as an AHL All-Star and will represent San Jose in the 2016 AHL All-Star Classic in Syracuse, N.Y.

Goodrow began his season with the Sharks, but like many of San Jose’s young players this season, struggled to find his place within the lineup on a consistent basis. He appeared in 14 games with the Sharks recording only three assists in those contests.

However, with the Barracuda, Goodrow has been an offensive force. In 22 games in the AHL, Goodrow has recorded 13 goals and 19 points, including his first career hat trick as a professional. His 13 goals lead the Barracuda and he’s second on the team in points behind Ryan Carpenter’s 25.

Goodrow was recognized as the AHL Player of the Week for the week ending on Dec. 6 after he recorded four goals, three assists and a plus-seven rating over a two game period.

Goodrow is the perfect example of a player going to the AHL to work on his game and the results are starting to show themselves. This is why it’s somewhat surprising to see Tierney recalled as he could have followed the same path Goodrow has in reestablishing his confidence.

Regardless, it’s great to see a young player like Goodrow recognized for his play with the Barracuda, and hopefully he can keep it going heading into the second half of the season.
